An impressive compilation of scientific research was presented by 贝博体育 students, alumni, and faculty members at this year’s 贝博体育’s Biomedical and Health Science Research Symposium held on December 1, 2023, at Hawaii Loa Campus. The 贝博体育 Undergraduate Infrastructure Student Research Center (HUI SRC), along with 贝博体育’s INBRE grant, hosted the symposium that featured a special keynote presentation from Baylor University Schotts Professor of Chemistry Daniel Romo, Ph.D.

贝博体育 students from various specializations and backgrounds attended the symposium to share information on their incredible research that includes findings on SARS-CoV-2, the influence on youth vaping behaviors, the synthesis of a bioresorbable antibiotic, and historical trauma, houselessness, and perceived stress in native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander youth.

The symposium convened some of the most impressive academic minds from across the state, uniting them to exchange cutting-edge insights in biomedical and health science. This event served as a platform for sharing the latest developments, fostering inspiration, and cultivating a landscape of knowledge.

In attendance was 贝博体育 alumnus and 2023 spring valedictory speaker Blaise Babineck, who worked with 贝博体育 Chemistry Professor David Horgen, Ph.D., on research titled, “Quantifying the Retention of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in Polyethylene Pellets of Various Photooxidation Stages.”

Elizabeth Milner, a member of the honors program at 贝博体育, was also present at the symposium. Milner presented on two posters, the first titled, “Evaluation of Antiviral Activity Against SARS-CoV-2 Found in Natural Hawaiian Marine Extracts,” and the second, “Synthesis of a bioresorbable antibiotic for use in medical devices.”

贝博体育 student Tessa Palafu received a prestigious HUI SRC grant in 2022 for her research on the effects of houselessness and historical trauma on the psychological well-being of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) transition-aged youth. She showcased her research at the symposium, a collaborative effort with 贝博体育 faculty members. Additionally, Palafu shared findings from another study on a second poster titled, “GeoVapeImpact: Analyzing Vape Store Proximity and its Influence on Youth Vaping Behaviors,” co-authored with 贝博体育 faculty members.

贝博体育 faculty members who attended the symposium and collaborated with 贝博体育 students and alumni on research papers included Associate Professor Brenden Holland, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Nursing Professor Edna Magpantay-Monroe, Ed.D., and Professor David Horgen, Ph.D.
